One Week to Go

Preparations for the 162nd Annual Harwinton Fair are under way. Buildings are being set up, the grounds are mowed and trimmed, and things are being put in place to get ready for the fair to begin!

All the workers & volunteers are definitely in Fair mode. The exhibitors entries have been recorded and tags are printed and waiting to be assembled for pickup later this week. Tags will be worked on Monday & Tuesday evening. Pickups only are scheduled for  Wednesday evening. Thursday entry tags can be picked up and the exhibits can be brought into the buildings. We have received over 2,800 entries. All our exhibitors are appreciated and are such an important part of this Fair.

So get ready for this Friday evening, Saturday & Sunday for all the fun at the Harwinton Fair.

New Happenings at the Harwinton Fair

We have some new things coming to our 162nd Annual Harwinton Fair.

First our Saturday hours have been extended to 8:00 pm. You can come and enjoy more at the fairgrounds, with entertainment, great food,  exhibits and much more.

Friday admission to the fair is $6.00. A great deal for an evening of fun for the whole family!

Saturday and Sunday admission is still at $8.00, with kids 12 years old and under free. Parking is also free.

Our English and Western horse shows will be now held on Saturday, with English in the morning and Western in the afternoon. Then on Sunday we will be doing Open & Youth 3D barrel racing in the morning and gymkhana in the afternoon.  This will feature a Halloween costume prize for the best dressed horse and rider combination. These events will be taking place in our newly upgraded horse ring. So come see a great new addition to our fair.

September 3D Barrel Racing at the Harwinton Fair

We will be holding our last 3D barreling racing competition for this year on September16th at the fairgrounds. The opening ceremony will take place at 10:30 am. This event has been a success that takes place in our newly upgraded horse ring. We have received very positive remarks from the competitors about the ring and look forward to having more events next year.

Also, the 3D barrel racing and Gymkhana events will now be a part of Annual Harwinton Fair on Sunday. This very popular competition is bringing in riders from many surrounding areas. We look forward to seeing you on September 16th. Admission for this September event is $5.00 per carload. So bring the family and enjoy!

Time for 162nd Annual Harwinton Fair

It's almost time for the 162nd Annual Harwinton Fair on October 5th, 6th, & 7th. Things are happening on the fairgrounds, getting everything in order. It takes a lot of work and time to get it all done. Our dedicated volunteers are busy every Tuesday evening and weekends preparing and setting up the grounds. We welcome anyone interested in getting involved with our Society to come help. It is a very rewarding experience to join us. Contact any director or member or just come! The Fair is Coming!

The 161st Annual Harwinton Fair is less than 2 months away. October 6th, 7th & 8th is the fair's 3 day weekend event. Put this on your calendar. Come join in the fun with something for everyone. Exhibits, displays, contests, good food & entertainment promises a good time for all.

Work nights are held every Tuesday from 4:30 to ??? There's always something that needs to be done. Anyone willing to volunteer is appreciated. It's a rewarding experience to help with the preparations.

2017 Premium Books Available

The premium books for 2017 are now available. Books have been  mailed to past exhibitors, fair members and anyone who asked to receive this year's book. It's time to start getting ready to decide what you would like to enter this year. Your entries are a very important part of our fair. So get busy and join in the fun!

Corrected Harwinton Residents' Baking Contest Recipe



HARWINTON RESIDENTS’ BAKING CONTEST
Corrected Version

KATHIE’S ZUCCHINI BARS

Filling                                                          Crust          

8 cups zucchini (peeled and sliced                    4 cups flour
approx. ¼ thick)                                            ½ tsp. salt
2/3 cup lemon juice                                         2 cups sugar
1 cup sugar                                                    1 ½ cup margarine
½ tsp cinnamon                                             1 tsp cinnamon*
¼ tsp nutmeg

Start by preparing crust. Combine the first 3 ingredients in a large bowl. Then cut in margarine until crumbly. Set aside.
To make filling, cook zucchini in lemon juice and sugar* until tender (a few minutes).
Then add nutmeg & cinnamon and simmer 3 to 4 minutes longer. Add ½ cup of crust mix to thicken. Set aside to cool.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Pat ½ of crust mixture into the bottom of 11x17 jelly roll pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Pour on the cooled filling.
Add 1 tsp cinnamon to remaining crust mix and sprinkle over top. Bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes. Cool and slice into squares.

SUBMIT 3 SQUARES ON PAPER PLATE COVERED WITH PLASTIC WRAP OR ZIPLOCK BAG.

2016 Premium Fair Books Are Ready

The premium fair books for 2016 are ready and have been mailed. Anyone who is a member of the Society should be receiving one this week. Also, anyone who exhibited in our fair in the past will be sent a book.

If you would like to receive a book this year, please contact our secretary, Lisa Shimels or a director. All the fair information is in the book, along with exhibitor entry forms and deadlines.

Volunteers Needed!

The Harwinton  Agricultural Society is looking for  volunteers to help us prepare for the 160th Annual Harwinton Fair on September 30th, October 1st & 2nd. We depend on our members & volunteers who make this fair possible each year. Any time you would be willing to give us will be greatly appreciated. It is a rewarding experience to be a part of this event. The people involved are hardworking and do have a good time!

Work nights are held every Tuesday from 5:00 pm on at the fairgrounds to do painting, maintenance and upgrades to the facilities. Contact any director or members and come join us!

2016 Scholarship Winners Announced

Every year the Harwinton Agricultural Society awards two $1,500.00 scholarships to area students who are pursuing higher educations in agricultural fields and non-agricultural fields who have been a part of fair.

Sarah Ammirato was awarded our 2016 agricultural scholarship of $1,500.00 on August 8th at the meeting of the Harwinton Agricultural Society's Board of Directors. She graduated from Wamogo Regional High School this June and will be attending the University of Connecticut in the fall. Sarah is pursuing a career in the the field of Agricultural Education working toward a degree in agricultural teaching.

Philip Weingart was awarded our 2016 non-agricultural scholarship of $1,500.00 at the August 8th meeting of the Society's Board of Directors. He attended Lewis Mills High School and graduated this June. In the fall Philip will be attending Old Dominion University in Virginia, pursuing a career in engineering. He has been a volunteer at our fair, and constructed a new Wood chopping building under the Eagle Scout program. The Society would like to thank him for his hard work and time given to us. We wish Philip continued success in the future.

2015 Premium Checks No Longer Valid

Due to fraudulent activity on our Premium Checking account, these checks can no longer be cashed. If you still have a premium check you would like to cash, please contact Judy (860) 485-9054 to make arrangements to replace your check. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused because of this action. Unfortunately, the dishonest people in this world have managed to create another situation we all have to deal with again!!!

We will be doing tags for the Fair on Tuesday evening at 7 pm at the Harwinton Library. If you'd like to join us, we appreciate the help. Many hands make light work!

The grounds are being set up all week. It's a lot of work but also fun to be a part of the Fair.

2015 Scholarships Awarded

Our 2015 annual scholarships were awarded on August 10th to Margaret "Maggie" Ellis and Emily Hill. Each received a $1,500.00 scholarship to be used toward the continuation of their education in the fall.

Emily will be attending Eastern State University pursuing a career in education. Maggie will be entering Delaware Valley pursing a study in the field of zoo sciences.

Both of our recipients have achieved a high level of excellence, graduating from high school in the top of their classes. We wish them success in all their future endeavors.

The 2015 Annual Premium book is now available on our website. You will find all the current information for this year's fair along with entry forms for exhibiting at our fair. Please note the deadlines for completing and submitting these forms to the proper fair personnel. You can print out these forms.

Getting Ready for Fair Time!

The Directors , members & volunteers are working every Tuesday evening getting the fairgrounds ready for the 159th Annual Harwinton Fair.  Come join us; we appreciate any help you can give us.

Our Premium Book committee is finalizing updates to this year's publication and will be available within the next couple weeks. So start thinking what you would like to present at our fair this year. Competing is fun and makes you a part of our fair!

Freebie Friday is Official!

This year the 159th Annual Harwinton Fair will present "Freebie Friday". This means there will be no charge to enter the fairgrounds on Friday evening from 4 pm to 9 pm. There will be a Car Show for the first time, along with entertainment from "Bootleg Band", food and other vendors, rides & amusements from Tufano Amusements. A wrist band for rides will be available for purchase on Friday only.

Exhibitors will be bringing in entries for Fair weekend from 4 pm to 8 pm so our two inside exhibit buildings along with our animal buildings will be in the process of getting ready. The Rabbits & Poultry will however have judging in progress.

Come join the fun and enjoy a Friday evening at the Harwinton Fair!!
